Summer in New Zealand

New Zealand

Exchange a little summer for a little winter in Dunedin, New Zealand. Enjoy world-class academics, picturesque landscapes, and a youthful city bustling with students. On the Summer in New Zealand program, you’ll get a taste of everything the country has to offer.

New Zealand is a breath-takingly beautiful country, with lush landscapes, a beautiful coastline, scenic mountain ranges, and the Middle-earth scenery appearing in the Lord of the Rings films. New Zealand is also a warm and welcoming, English-speaking country. Many would think of New Zealand as a laid-back, and somewhat quaint nation, perhaps due to the fact that sheep outnumber people, but New Zealanders, or Kiwis, are a lively, adventure-seeking bunch.

Study abroad in New Zealand for a semester on either the North or South Island! What's the difference between the North and South Islands of New Zealand you may ask? Here's a quick rundown:

  • The North Island is more densely populated and home to relatively large cities such as Wellington - the "San Francisco of New Zealand" and home of Semester on the North Island - and Auckland - the country's largest city at nearly 1.5 million residents
  • The North Island has a more prevalent Maori culture, the native culture of Pacific island heritage
  • The South Island is renowned for its dramatic landscapes and exceptional outdoor adventure opportunities
  • The South Island has a larger European influence, as places like Dunedin (location of Semester on the South Island) still celebrate their Scottish heritage.

If you choose to study on the North Island, you’ll live in Wellington, the country’s capital city. You can study in a wide variety of courses at a university that warmly receives thousands of international students every term. On the South Island, you’ll study at the University of Otago, one of the few residential universities in New Zealand that receives Kiwis from around the country and students from around the world. Finally, you can also choose to do a J-Term or Winter Break program through our January in New Zealand program, which also takes place at the same university on the South Island.
